-- A CAREER OF SERVICE AND ADVOCACY

Steven Afriat is an expert in public policy, political strategy and governmental decision-making.

Formerly Chief Deputy to Los Angeles City Councilmember (now County Supervisor) Zev Yaroslavsky, Afriat also served as a Chief Legislative Aide to the California State Legislature and has extensive experience in government and public affairs. He has been rewarded for his years of service with appointments to many boards and commissions, including the Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission, Los Angeles County Citizens Planning Advisory Commission, State Senate Insurance Advisory Commission, Los Angeles City Board of Animal Regulation, and as the City of Los Angeles' Council President’s appointee to the Proposition F Citizen Oversight Committee. Currently, he serves the County of Los Angeles as President of the Business License Commission and the State of California as the Assembly Speaker’s appointee to the Bipartisan California Commission of Internet Political Practices.

He has received honors, including an appointment to the State Central Committee, an Award of Merit from the California State Assembly and commendations from the City and County of Los Angeles. Willing to dig his heels in for a cause or client, Afriat always seeks to foster a winning and agreeable spirit of coalition with maximum support engendered to boost his client's interest. Throughout his governmental and professional career, Afriat has developed a formidable network which spans throughout Los Angeles to Sacramento and Washington, DC.

As Council Office Chief of Staff, he was charged with vast municipal administrative responsibility in legislation, land use, building and safety, public works and community relations: put simply, he gained through first-hand experience an encyclopedic awareness of the nooks and crannies of government. Having subsequently entered the private sector where he has served innumerable clients, Afriat has never ceased employing a comprehensive attitude and dedicated work style toward solving problems.

A good example of Afriat's regional stature and ability to organize and strategize can be found in his 1995 role as Campaign Director for the historic "Yes on Charter Amendments 1 through 8" campaign to reform City of Los Angeles governmental practices. All eight amendments were approved in April 1995 by an overwhelming majority of the voters!

Afriat was assigned by then-Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan the responsibility of organizing a coalition of support, called "Citizens to Turn LA Around", favoring the Amendments. This coalition worked hand-in-hand with Mayor Riordan, and Afriat handled the many intricate communications with the diverse members of the coalition. It included a great majority of the City Council, Democratic and Republican groups, important City leadership and business, labor and community activists. Afriat was able to enlist support across the societal spectrum without ever raising the specter of opposition.

This marked the beginning of Afriat becoming the consultant of choice for City officials. In 1996, Afriat managed the successful Proposition K (LA for Kids) campaign approving new assessments for Parks and Recreation. In 1998, Afriat managed Measure DD, garnering a two-thirds majority approving Library bonds. In 2001, Afriat managed the Proposition F campaign, gaining the highest approval margin ever for Fire and Animal Services bonds. And, in March 2002, Afriat managed the Proposition Q campaign, garnering a two-thirds majority approving Police and Fire bonds. These victories represent an extraordinary example of the positive virtues of coalition building, and Steven Afriat considers them to be among his proudest accomplishments.
